Google “B&B’s in Chicago” and select “20 Best Chicago B&B’s on TripAdvisor“. Number 3 on the list is the Welcome Inn Manor. Go to Bed and Breakfasts.com and you will get a list of over twenty B&B’s in Chicago. Scroll down the list and the most spectacular house on the list is the Welcome Inn Manor.
The Welcome Inn Manor is an 1890’s era Queen Ann style brick mansion situated on a corner lot. Visit the Welcome Inn Manor website and you will learn that it is located within 3 miles of the McCormick Place Convention Center, University of Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology and U.S. Cellular Field, home of the Chicago White Sox. The inn keeper offers complimentary drop off service to his guests to these and other locations.
Inn keepers Mel and Angela Higginbotham Monroe are self-described Urban Pioneers. Mel, a former corporate recruiter for fortune 500 technology companies, and Angie, a Chicago Public School speech therapist originally purchased the house as their personal residence. Mel decided to open their house as a B&B over three years ago. The Welcome Inn Manor is located on South Michigan Avenue, surrounded by block after block of once spectacular buildings. Some have been restored to their original splendor and others are vacant and boarded up. It is an area in transition.
Their house is located in the Bronzeville Neighborhood south of the Chicago loop. The neighborhood, historically African American, is unique because it is being revitalized by upwardly mobile African-Americans. The boards are coming off the buildings and the homes are being restored. It is becoming a “happening” area of town.
Welcome Inn Manor’s excellent reviews are no accident. Mel’s huge personality is a major factor. You cannot help but like him. He cooks, he drives guests to their meetings and events, he encourages guests to bring their friends to the B&B for an evening of socializing. Officials at the University of Chicago have taken notice and refer guests to the B&B. He gives a friendly response to every review when the website allows him to do so.
Catherine and I enjoyed our visit to the Welcome Inn Manor and Mel’s recommendation of a restaurant for dinner. We hope Mel and Angie soon decide they need a break from their B&B and give us a call.
