The tulips were in full bloom when Sam and Andy, Catherine’s Little Lambs, visited the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. They wanted their picture taken with every flower on the estate. As fantastic as the house is, the grounds, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, are even more amazing. The formal garden and the green houses are just a fraction of the design. Olmstead transformed the whole area, thousands of acres, from marginal farm land into nearly a magical environment.
I am personally convinced that the reason the estate is so well maintained and managed is because it is still entirely owned by descendents of George Washington Vanderbilt II, the original owner. If the family had turned the estate over to any government entity, regulations and bureaucracy would have made the estate far too expensive to maintain.
